Today we’d like to introduce you to Leigh Lench.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.

When I was a child, I always wanted to be a nurse when I grew up. My favorite doll was a nurse. I have been a nurturer my whole life.

My after-school job during high school was working as a dental assistant. I thought that I may enroll in dental hygiene college, but a patient guided me into the world of travel. I worked as a flight attendant for a short while, which led me to travel school, which landed me a wonderful job as a corporate travel coordinator for a Fortune 500 company. I loved every minute of it!

Ten years later I married and lived on Nantucket Island. My husband and I owned and operated a large boat yard facility. Another job which was people oriented. Are you seeing the pattern here? Unfortunately, the marriage ended and I returned to my home town of Duxbury. Knowing that I needed to work, and not knowing what direction to go in, I decided to meditate on it. One gorgeous early July morning I sat on a rock on the beach, looked up to the sky and asked, ”What am I supposed to do now”? I was fixed on the horizon for some time when I heard a voice say, “Massage Therapy.” I replied, exactly!! I knew no one was behind me but I needed to look! Once again, my trust in the universe came through. That was a Sunday. The following day I was researching schools. I enrolled in a school that was close to home and was not only a massage therapy school but also taught holistic health. I was enrolled for September classes!

When asked to pick a specialty class I knew right away that is was Prenatal Massage.

Has it been a smooth road?

I made school my job so that I could finish and start work. I had a 12-year-old son who I needed to support.

I opened my first office 18 years ago. I have loved it all. Especially meeting new clients every week. I practice therapeutic massage as well as prenatal massage specialties.

After working for five years as a sole practitioner and being exceedingly busy I decided to expand my practice. I thought this was a good idea but in the long run it was harder. Being a boss as well as working with your weekly clients was difficult. After five years of having employees I decided to go back to working alone. This decision came after the 2008-2009 financial collapse. I continued to be busy and booked with my client base that I had grown now for 10 years but the same did not hold true for all the employees. They became frustrated as did I.

Once again, I posed the question “What should I do now”? The answer came while I was in a quiet space, as in July 1998. “Work alone!” So, I began looking for a space to go solo again. I also found jobs for all of my employees. This made me happy, as these were good people. I wanted them happy too.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Featherstones story. Tell us more about the business.

Featherstones Massage Therapy and Birth Studio.

I specialize in Therapeutic Massage as well as Prenatal Massage specialties.

My practice encompasses therapy with pre- and post-surgical patients, in my office, hospitals and private homes. I also see clients who have joint injuries, anxiety, asthma, strokes, and cancer, as well as children with Cerebral Palsy, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, sensory and cognitive disorders, ADD and ADHD.

I am known for relieving all types of pain on all levels. Physical and emotional. I spend time before each session getting to know my clients so I can understand the ailment completely. My clients are not lead into the massage room without knowing first what their history of the ailment is. This history can go back as far as child hood. In many cases, chronic pain begins with an emotional trauma.

I am most known for my prenatal massage, natural labor induction massage and natural breech turning massage. I have completed additional training in pregnancy massage as well eastern philosophy healing. Being knowledgeable in these fields is very important while working with pregnancy. Understanding acupressure points that are throughout the entire body and correlate with our organs is imperative to the safety of the client. This knowledge sets me apart from others. This part of my business is my passion.

I have also completed courses in Cranio-Sacral Therapy, Lypossage Therapy, La Stone Hot Stone Massage, Reiki Master and Birth Doula certification.

I am very proud of my reputation as a massage therapist. I have worked very hard to continue my education and research the issues that my clients have. I am thankful and grateful for the trust that my clients have in me as they refer me to their friends, family and colleagues. This is my fulltime passion, and I put my all into it. Professionals such as OB-GYN’s, physical therapists, chiropractors, homeopaths and MD’s refer their patients to me as well. The medical community now understands that Therapeutic Massage is no longer viewed as a luxury but as a necessity to help achieve overall good health. I have been in business for 18 years and don’t see an end in sight!

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?

My practice continues to grow monthly. Especially with the prenatal massage specialties. Women are now realizing that they have options when it comes to inducing labor and turning breech babies. They are now also being educated about the benefits of monthly prenatal massage for themselves and their babies.
