When is the right time to receive this technique?
As explained on the prenatal page, I perform a natural inducement massage for mothers who are full term in their pregnancy. Full term constitutes a 39 + week term. In addition to completing your 39th week, I require that an exam be performed by your Dr./midwife/ nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant. This should take place in you Obstetrics or health care provider’s office. When they inform you that your dilation and effacement process has begun, they may at this time give you permission to receive the inducement technique.
It is important that you have a full understanding that this massage is intended to be performed only at full term.
What to expect during and after the technique
This is a non invasive technique which is intended to relax you, while stimulating labor. You may experience Braxton Hicks or actual contractions during the massage. Some women do not have contractions, but will experience some low vaginal pressure. Every woman and every pregnancy varies. If at any time during the technique you experience dizziness, try placing another pillow behind you to prop yourself up higher. Cold packs placed on the chest and the back of the neck can be helpful as well. It is important to hydrate prior to and after the technique. Dehydration can cause dizziness.
Once the technique has been completed, be sure to take your time moving off of the bed. Continue to drink plenty of water. You may feel like sleeping afterwards, this being a benefit to staying relaxed and allow the process of labor to take place. Labor may begin soon after the completion of the technique or could take a couple of days.
Another advantage of learning this technique is to utilize it throughout all of the stages of labor including active labor. It may minimize the time to the actual delivery. It may also be used to assist in the delivery of the placenta.
Breathe….. Relax…..Connect……Enjoy……
Choosing the best partner and location
- The most important thing is to be in a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. Wherever you are comfortable will be the right place for you. Create the perfect setting. Ask yourself; what makes you happy? Where are you the most peaceful? Create a quiet space. No telephones, computers or children playing. Please remember that this is meant to be a beautiful event, part of your birth story.
- This massage should be performed by an individual whom you are close to and trust. Someone who can relax you and keep you calm. This person should be someone that you are totally comfortable with and who is supportive. It may be your partner, your friend or a family member.
- Make sure you have a clear calendar and no place to be. This technique should not be rushed. It is not a check mark in your day. It will become a memorable event in your pregnancy.
- Relax, Embrace and Enjoy! Have a happy birth!
Supplies you will need
- A massage table is preferable but your bed/couch or floor is fine also.
- Massage Oil: You can buy this at a health food store or your local super market. Always buy unscented massage oil, as you may experience an adverse reaction to scented oil.
- Clean linens ( top and bottom sheet), towels, blankets, three to four bed pillows, a bolster or larger pillow for under the knees, eye pillow, foot cream, relaxing music and plenty of drinking water.
This video is for the sole purpose to assist expecting mothers in entering their labor in a safe and natural state. It is not intended as an instructional video for massage therapists or other health professionals. In my opinion, all massage therapists and/ or health professionals who intend on working with prenatal clients should complete the required prenatal classes to ensure the safety of your clients. All women receiving prenatal massage should inquire about the credentials and qualifications of you your massage therapist. This is for the safety of yourself and your unborn baby.
